Sunrise Suprise
Monday, January 24, 2011
This morning we had a whole school lockdown practice. We call it QUIET practice. The star symbol was on our schedule to let us know that something different was happening today. The children did well.
This afternoon our 3rd grade reading buddies joined us for this story:

Then click on Tumblebooks and type in
50 Below Zero
in the search bar.
Children all enjoyed the repeated refrains in the story -
- the snoring sound "zzzz-zzzz-zzzz-zzzz"
- "Papa, wake up!"
- "This house is going crazy!"

Mouse
We began a new guided reading book today - MOUSE. This silly mouse likes to eat in bed. We had lots of fun introducing this book. We really have to focus on the text because the sentence structure changes from "Mouse likes......." to "She likes......." We have to pay attention to the words when we read them! Can your child look at this picture and tell you some of the things that Mouse ate in her bed?

Snow in the classroom
It is very exciting to bring SNOW INSIDE an elementary school! Random children in the hallway asked me, "What is that?" "Do you have SNOW?" It's like they've never seen it before.
Our 4th grade buddies who would have gone swimming with us this afternoon joined us for snowman activities. We listened to snowman music :

We put out bowls of the real stuff. It was wet and messy. We made little snowmen. We did some S writing. We did the snowman Hokey Cokey. It was grand.

Student Highlight
This student has a daily classroom job to take the orange folder to the office. Each day he walks to the office with one of our Essential teachers. Today he went with the Art Teacher. They were talking and laughing all the way there and back, even when he dropped the folder and had to stop to pick it up.He couldn't take his eyes off of her today!

-ig words
Children made different -ig words today as part of guided reading. Our book "My Big Bear" started us out with the word "big." We went from there, changing out the first letter and making new words. We finished by writing these words in our writing books. Childeren have been working with the magnet letters for awhile now and know the system: pull the letters down to match the letters on the card, run your finger under the word while saying it, push the letters back up, turn the card over and make the next word.
Yogurt Parfaits
Yummy Yogurt Parfaits were on the menu today. Our student teacher created easy to follow stations for step by step completion of the yogurt, fruit, and granola parfaits. While one group made their parfaits, the other group practiced scooping and pouring. They finished with a comprehension sheet. Tomorrow we will follow up with "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" at Talk Time. Look for us to make this recipe again next month.
** Note: No swimming tomorrow, January 19. The pool is unexpectedly closed. We will have a special activity instead.

Friday Fun Club
We had scheduled a trip to Ore Creek for Friday Fun Club. We had read our social story about walking there, saying hi to our friends and the teacher, playing Disney Bingo and having a chocolate snack. We were ready. Then an email came from the teacher at Ore Creek saying that she had to unexpectedly leave and would have to cancel. In the middle of our morning work we stopped and made the necessary changes to our visual schedule. We put the red universal "no" symbol over the social story. All the students watched and listened. A few had questions or comments. No one got upset over the change. We had Friday Fun Club games in our classroom and ate our brownies and chocolate milk. All was well.
As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, January 17. Have some fun together and be sure to tell me about it! I love hearing your stories.

Courage
These girls were working together this morning using the iPad.
The word of the month for January at Creekside is COURAGE. All classrooms have the word displayed and all classrooms teach a lesson on the topic. We have been listening to a read aloud book titled COURAGE. Today we made pennants to hang in the hallway - " COURAGE to be me!!" We listened to a song called "Courage Is" and met Courage the Cowardly Dog in a funny cartoon.
